Let me tell you about my friend Ricardo. His friends call him Bubs, or Bubba. Ricardo is a very special person. He's 41 years old and has Down syndrome, which makes him unique and amazing. He has a big heart full of love and a smile that lights up the entire room, making everyone around him feel happy.
Bubs knows he's special. Some people he meets are very kind and treat him with lots of warmth, seeing him just as he is. But sometimes, others don’t notice him, almost like he's invisible. But you know what? Ricardo doesn’t let that bother him! He knows he's a bright star, and he keeps on shining and smiling no matter what. His positivity is like sunshine on a rainy day.
I've been so lucky to know Bubba and his wonderful mom, who he sweetly calls "my coach," for almost ten years. We have a very special friendship. Bubba’s mom raised him with so much love and taught him good manners, which makes him extra special and kind. She shows him how to be polite and caring, and Bubba always remembers to say "please" and "thank you."
What I’ve learned from Bubba is simple: he wants what we all want—to be seen, heard, and loved. He doesn’t want people to ignore him like he’s a scary monster. Having Down syndrome is just one part of him, like being tall or short makes us all unique in our own ways. It’s important to see the person and not just a label.
Bubba teaches us all about kindness. If everyone learned from him, the world would be a much nicer place. We should be kind every day, not just when we choose to, but because it’s the right thing to do. Bubba is always ready to share a smile or a hug, and he makes everyone feel special.
Ricardo loves football more than anything! He collects football cards and knows all about the players. He cheers for his favorite team with so much excitement, you can feel the energy in the room. He also laughs a lot at the TV show "Friends" and can’t stop giggling at the funny parts. Joey and Chandler make him laugh the most, and he tries to copy their silly jokes.
Saturdays are his favorite days because we go out for lunch and watch a movie together. We always pick a fun place to eat where Bubba can have his favorite cheesy pizza, and then we head to the theater for an adventure on the big screen. Those are the best times, filled with popcorn and laughter.
He’s also a superstar athlete with lots of medals from the Special Olympics. He runs really fast and is super strong. Bubba was also part of ROTC, where he learned to march and salute like a real soldier. His salute is the best and snappiest around, and he practices it with pride.
So, trust me when I say, don’t be afraid to say hello to Bubba. When you see him for who he really is, he’ll make your heart happy in no time, even if it’s the coldest heart around. Ricardo’s world is filled with love, laughter, and endless possibilities, and I’m so thankful to be part of it.
Now that you know a little about my friend Ricardo, let me take you on an adventure. In the next chapter, we’ll explore one of his favorite things in the world: football! Get ready to hear all about his love for the game and his amazing football adventures.
